McGill University Announces New Dental Clinic Plan

McGill University has announced plans to open a new dental clinic to serve more patients.

The university currently operates a clinic from the Montreal General Hospital, but there is a lack of space and the equipment is old; the hospital now needs the space currently occupied by the clinic and the university has revealed plan to open a brand new dental centre in downtown Montreal next to the McGill metro station.

The university has stated that the clinic will open in June 2014; the designs feature three floors and treatment rooms with 58 dental chairs and state of the art equipment. Currently, there are 42 dental chairs, so more patients will be treated at the new facility.

Dr Paul Allison, dean of the dental faculty at McGill, said that the location of the new clinic is perfect, as it is next to the metro station and there is a bus stop directly outside. Transport links are important, as most of the patients have low incomes and use public transport to get around.

McGill is also planning to increase the number of dental students at the university and the expansion will enable them to train on the job. Last year, the university provided treatment for 4,420 Montrealers and there are plans to increase this number significantly when the new clinic opens its doors next summer. Dr Allison estimates that the capacity will increase by around 10 per cent.

The clinic offers treatment at around half the price of private dental practices.
