Massive Regional Variations in Dental Bills

Research has revealed huge regional variations in the cost of private dental treatment.

The findings of the research carried out by a team at WhatClinic.com, were published yesterday, with some shocking results. The study showed that bills can vary by hundreds of pounds according to the area of the country.

The cost of a root canal treatment was as little as £57 in Newcastle, but prices in parts of London were up to 953 percent higher and often priced at more than £600. Tooth whitening, the most popular cosmetic dental treatment in the UK cost between £99 and £895 and there was a difference of £1,880 between the lowest and highest prices for veneers. For some treatments, prices within the same city varied by up to 900 percent.

The results of the study also show that more than half of the participants were willing to travel more than 30 miles to see an affordable dentist, as travelling could potentially save hundreds of pounds. For example, dental implant treatment costs from £2000 in Sheffield compared to £1350 in Manchester.

Marketing manager from WhatClinic.com, Philip Boyle, said that people who were prepared to travel could save a significant amount of money, however, he urged people to check the qualifications of the dentist.

The research also confirmed that cost was a major factor when it comes to arranging dental appointments, with 84 percent of Britons put off treatment because of the high cost of procedures.
