A man needed medical and dental treatment after being bitten by a drunken businessman after a day at Doncaster Races, a court heard.

Company director, Carl Messen bit stranger, Michael Hollick, after drinking too much at Ladies’ Day at Doncaster Races last year; Messen, who is the owner of a pub empire in West Yorkshire, attacked the stranger at Relish in Doncaster town centre, leaving him with facial and dental injuries.

Judge Roger Keen ordered Mr Messen to pay the victim £5000 in compensation and said that Messen had acted as a result of drinking too much alcohol during the day. Messen had started an argument with Mr Hollick in the bar toilet and then followed him for 20 minutes before launching a vicious attack, culminating in the company director biting Hollick’s ear, leaving him with permanent disfigurement.

Mr Hollick, who is self-employed, aid that the attack had left me extremely shaken and he was forced to take time off work, which he estimates cost him around £2000; he also had to undergo treatment for facial and dental injuries, as well as injuries to his body.

Defending, Keith Whitehouse, said that Mr Messen had sincere regret at causing such horrific injuries and was remorseful about the situation; he also added that Mr Messen had been an exemplary citizen prior to the incident and was fully willing to give the victim compensation.
