Lambeth Council is offering free vapes to pregnant women to encourage them to stop smoking and help them save money on buying cigarettes.

Smoking during pregnancy is the most significant risk factor for complications, including miscarriage, stillbirth, low birth weight and premature birth. Studies show that women from low-income households are more likely to smoke during pregnancy than women from more affluent backgrounds.

The council is running a scheme to provide pregnant women who smoke with free e-cigarettes to help them to quit and save them money.

Representatives from the council suggest that the initiative could save parents in London up to £2,000 per year as well as reducing the risk of pregnancy and childbirth complications dramatically.

A spokesperson for Lambeth Council explained that vaping is “less harmful” than smoking. The best route for pregnant women to take is to give up smoking and to eliminate the use of nicotine completely, but the scheme is there to help those who struggle to give up and want to use vaping to as an aid to quit. Giving up can be very difficult for some people and vaping can help those who want to quit to cut down by lowering nicotine content while also eradicating exposure to other toxins found in cigarettes.
