A charity based in London has provided free dental care for refugees.

The Dental Wellness Trust, which is based in Hampstead, recently offered free oral health sessions for children in the city, providing care for 35 refugees and asylum seekers. The charity aims to fill gaps in NHS provision, stepping in when people who need urgent help cannot access appointments.

Treating refugees and asylum seekers is part of the charity’s Livesmart Dental Care programme, which operates in Camden, Barnet and Westminster.
Founder of the Dental Wellness Trust, Dr Linda Greenwall, said that the impact of “poor oral health on quality of life is of urgent importance for these populations who are outside their habitual healthcare system, have limited financial resources and have lost their social support network.”

Initiatives like the Livesmart Dental Care programme, Dr Greenwall added, are “vital” for children and their parents to help to provide treatment and preventative services and advice, which will lower risks in later life.

The charity is currently in the process of renovating its mobile dental unit, which will be stationed at the Dental Centre for Refugee Children in Camden once work is complete. The plan is to provide advice and free treatment for refugees and other members of the community who need urgent help.
