Hull East MP, Karl Turner, visited children at a Bransholme nursery to celebrate World School Milk Day last week.

Mr Turner joined the team of staff at Dorchester Community Nursery School to hand out cups of milk to the children as part of the global celebration of the benefits of milk for children.

Most people, including Mr Turner, have fond memories of sipping milk at break times at school and as well as being tasty, milk also has a range of health benefits for kids, including helping to build stronger teeth and bones. Mr Turner said that he remembers being given milk as a child at school and said that it is important that children drink a lot of milk, as calcium is important for the development of strong and healthy teeth, nails and bones.

World School Milk Day is designed to raise awareness of the benefits of drinking milk and encourage more children to drink milk; recently, other drinks, including fizzy pop, have become more popular but they do not have the same health benefits and many schools are eager to keep milk at break times.

Milk is provided free of charge for children in nursery or primary education and milk for older children, aged between 5 and 11 years old, is subsidised.

Cool Milk supplies Dorchester Community Nursery School; managing director, John Sedgewick, said that milk is an important factor for the development and growth of children.
