A local MP is disappointed after it was revealed that Penzance would not be receiving any of the additional funding granted to NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly to reduce waiting lists in the region.

MP Andrew George said that the decision not to spend money in Penzance, where there is a lengthy waiting list, was disappointing, as currently, there are more than one thousand people waiting to register with an NHS dentist. Mr George said that he was planning to talk to the Primary Care Trust about the decision and was let down by the fact that Penzance has been underserved for a long period of time.

The trust was recently given an additional sum of £3.5 million to improve access to NHS dental services.

Bridget Sampson, Deputy Director of primary care at NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, said that the trust has focused on areas that are underserved and brought in new dentists to replace those that have retired. The investment is very welcome and will be used to expand existing services to enable more people to benefit from NHS dental care. Ms Sampson also added that the trust was hoping to unveil new plans for the next financial year in the coming weeks.
