Liverpool Scientists develop New Device to identify Cavities

Sample News Big

Scientists from Liverpool University have developed a new dental device to identify cavities and early signs of decay.

The Identifi system can detect signs of decay and cavities before they are visible to the human eye and is comprised of a hand-held intra-oral appliance and a computer system. The Identifi device uses a technique known as Qualitative Light Induced Fluorescence, which illuminates the teeth and enables dentists to see very early stages of decay and very small cavities.

Images captured by the intra-oral camera can be sent to a computer, iPhone, iPad or a laptop via wireless technology, which enables dental professionals to analyse and evaluate images immediately using a range of different media.

The team behind the device claim that it will be particularly beneficial for orthodontic patients, as they will be able to see traces of plaque left behind after brushing. The device is currently undergoing clinical trials and will hopefully be launched onto the market in 2012.
