Leven Patients To lose Out As Dental practice Closure Is Confirmed

Patients in the East Riding village of Leven are set to lose out on local dental services, following the conformation that Leven Dental Surgery will close in May.

Dentists Helen Cowley and John Essam were forced to make the announcement after the lease for the premises they currently occupy was terminated. With no other suitable locations in the village, the dentists will now relocate to South Cave.

The practice has a patient list of 2,500 and people will be now be forced to travel to South Cave or find an NHS practice closer to Leven. Patient Ali Moulds said that she will continue to see the dentists at the South Cave practice because she thinks they are excellent dentists, but added that she wished they were closer. Patients wishing to continue seeing the Leven dentists will now have to make a 36 mile round trip, which may prove particularly difficult for those who do not have their own transport.

Helen Cowley said that it was a great shame that the practice is closing after twenty two years, but added that both her and John are very thankful for the support they have received in the past and over the course of the last few months, which have been very difficult. The surgery is closing because the owners of property, Dr Sykes and Partners, want to use the space currently occupied by the dental surgery for expanding pharmaceutical services.

Mrs Cowley said that she was hopeful that many of her patients would join the South Cave practice, but confirmed that the closure of the surgery would mean the loss of a dental nurse, which she described as a great shame.

The couple was given 6 months notice by the owners of the premises and the dentists set about trying to find an alternative space, but there were no suitable properties and it would cost a lot of money to build a new surgery or convert an existing building into a purpose-built dental practice and this meant that the only option was to find another practice.

The surgery will officially close on the 16th May.
