The residents of Leigh could soon combine their weekly shopping trip with a visit to the dentist if a planning application to convert part of a Sainsbury’s store into a dental surgery is approved.

The Centre for Dentistry has applied to convert part of the Sainsbury’s store on Parsonage Retail Park into a dental surgery. The surgery would employ a team of one dentist, two dental nurse and two administrative staff. The planning council is scheduled to go before the planning department at Wigan Council on the 1st October.

The plans show two treatment rooms, a consultation room, a waiting room and a staffroom and the plan is to take walk-in urgent and emergency appointments, as well as scheduled appointments. The surgery would be open during shop hours and the fees would be pitched between NHS fees and private rates to make dentistry more affordable for families and individuals.

A spokesman for the Centre for Dentistry said that the project was very exciting and would enable people to visit a dentist out of hours and make use of a full range of services.

If the plans are approved by Wigan Council, this will be the fourteenth venture between Sainsbury’s and the Centre for Dentistry. The spokesman added that the firm was confident of getting the building work underway very quickly and anticipated that the practice would open its doors to patients in the near future.
