Dr Ardash Bhatt, from Blaby Dental Practice, Blaby, is hosting a free oral cancer clinic today to raise awareness of the deadly disease.

Dr Bhatt is inviting patients to attend the clinic to learn about the causes and risk factors and also the symptoms of oral cancer. The clinic will take place between 11am and 1pm.

Dr Bhatt said that the dental team is “delighted” to support Mouth Cancer Awareness Month, which is run by the British Dental Health Foundation. The aim of the campaign is to inform and educate people about oral cancer to ensure that they are familiar with the causes and symptoms; at the moment, many cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when treatment is less likely to succeed, because they are unaware of the signs they should be looking out for.

Dr Bhatt said that it was “vital” that people know the symptoms to look out for and also that they visit their dentist on a regular basis for a check-up; dentists look for early warnings and symptoms of oral cancer during routine check-ups and the earlier the disease is detected, the better the chance of survival.

Signs of oral cancer include slow healing sores, such as ulcers that take more than three weeks to disappear, red or white patches in the mouth and abnormal swelling in the mouth or throat.
