A mother from Leicester has been charged with neglect after failing to take her daughter to see a dentist. The 26 year old woman was found guilty of cruelty by neglect after her daughter was found to have several abscesses and 12 teeth that were so severely decayed that they were extracted.

The 26 year old woman appeared in court in Leicester and Judge Simon Hammond said that it was clear that the child was in pain and required dental treatment. he added that the defendant had failed to take the child to see a dentist and consequently, she developed severe dental health problems, which required intensive treatment.

Prosecuting, James Varley, said that the child had a number of abscesses and needed 12 teeth extracting because they were so badly decayed.

Judge Hammond confirmed that care proceedings had been taken following the case and the child is now living with her grandparents in another country in Europe; the mother is in contact with her daughter via the Internet and hopes to be reunited with her soon.

The court heard that in the mother’s homeland it is not common to take children to the dentist; however, Judge Hammond said that it must have been clear that the child was suffering and the mother had a duty to seek the appropriate treatment, which she failed to fulfil.

The mother was given a 12 month community order with supervision; she has not been identified for legal reasons.
