Leicester dentist found guilty of misconduct

A dentist from Leicester has been found guilty of misconduct at a General Dental Council hearing.

Peter Wesolowski, from AA Giovani & Associates, faced a GDC hearing after it emerged that he touched two female patients inappropriately, made comments about his nurse’s sex life in front of a patient and made inappropriate comments about Pakistanis in front of his colleagues.

The dentist, who is originally from Australia, was found guilty of charges of professional misconduct and making racist remarks and also admitted to a series of allegations of poor professional treatment and record keeping. Wesolowski was also found guilty of offering treatment in return for a sexual relationship.

In his defence, Wesolowski’s lawyer, Malcolm Fortune QC, said that physical contact with patients was inadvertent and largely due to the fact that the dentist is left handed and was working in a practice that was set up for right handed dentists. Mr Wesolowski said that he was a caring person and as a result he often touched patients who were nervous about being at the dentist, to offer them support and reassurance. He admitted that he touched patients in what may have been deemed an inappropriate manner but said that his intentions were always to reassure the patient and make them feel at ease.

The GDC will now decide on an appropriate course of action and they may decide to strike the dentist off the register and prevent him from practising. Mr Wesoloswki has now returned to New South Wales, Australia.
