One of the UK’s most high-profile dental experts has urged the public to brush along to a tune to ensure a thorough clean.

Professor Damien Walmsley, spokesperson for the British Dental Association and professor of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Birmingham, said that this simple step can help people to improve their dental hygiene and reduce the risk of oral disease.

Prof Walmsley uses an app to monitor brushing. The app plays a 2-minute burst of his favourite track by Lou Reed to make sure that he brushes for the recommended time.

Brushing is the most effective means of removing bacteria and food debris from the mouth to reduce the risk of plaque formation and protect the teeth and gums.

Studies indicate that many people think they brush for longer than they do, which may mean that they miss key areas. Setting a timer on a phone, using an app, buying a toothbrush with a timer and playing along to music can all help to boost dental health.

Dentists recommend brushing for at least two minutes twice a day. Most people brush in the morning and before they go to bed. It is also advisable to use fluoride toothpaste, to avoid brushing too firmly to protect the enamel and to use floss or interdental brushes to clean between the teeth and the gum line. Brushing the tongue can also help to lower the risk of decay, gum disease and bad breath.
