Lancaster Dentist Dispels Walnut Healing Myth

Sample News Big

A dentist from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has spoken out to warn people about home remedies for dental problems; Dr Stephen Raffensperger has warned that black walnuts, a popular Amish remedy, have no benefit for oral health.

Dr Raffensperger said that there is a belief among Amish communities that black walnuts help to prevent cavities, but in reality there is no truth to this and people are effectively falling foul of a hoax. Furthermore, Dr Raffensperger said that the walnuts can actually make oral health worse because they can cause fillings to become displaced.

Dr Raffensperger said that it is frustrating that patients do not listen to his advice. He sees a large number of Amish patients and they have a belief that the black walnut remedy is something that dentists do not want patients to know about. He added that it was difficult to convince patients because they are so firm in their belief and this represents a severe case of miseducation.

Dr Raffensperger said that he has seen flyers around documenting the amazing healing capacities of black walnut tincture and using an example of a boy who had cracked teeth, which magically healed after using the tincture for two weeks.
