The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to introduce a preventative dental programme to improve standards of oral health.

The Special Adviser to the Governor of Health, Yewande Ashina, revealed plans to introduce the scheme in primary care centres across the state when talking at a joint World Press Conference, which took place at Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa. The talk took place to mark 2012 World Oral Health Day.

Initially, the scheme will be rolled out in two centres: the Rauf Aregbesola Primary Health Centre in Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area and the Iga Idunganran Primary Health Centre in Lagos Island. In time, the programme will expand to other centres in the state.

Yewande Ashina also revealed plans to attempt a new record for the Guinness Book of Records; the plan is to gather 300,000 teenager students in varying locations to carry out a simultaneous tooth brushing challenge. The aim of the challenge is to encourage young people to clean their teeth and promote preventative measures.

Mrs Ashina stressed that the state government is eager to focus on dental hygiene and good eating habits to reduce rates of decay and ensure that children have the information and resources they need to enjoy good oral health. Mrs Ashina said that preventative dental care is particularly important, as studies have revealed that poor oral health can contribute to an increased risk of serious illnesses, including heart disease.
