Kids Making Oral Hygiene Fun in Sunderland

Children in Sunderland put the fun into learning, during a week-long oral health project.

Pupils from Sunningdale School, which provides educational services for children with special needs, took part in the Tooth Fairy Roadshow, which is sponsored by Wrigley’s and run by the oral health promotion team at South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust.

The team is visiting schools in the area throughout autumn to encourage children to learn about oral health and teach them how to take good care of their teeth and gums. The roadshows are aimed to help children with special needs, as well as their parents, teachers and carers, in order to improve standards of oral health and ensure that children have a healthy, radiant smile.

Joanne Purvis, manager of the oral health promotion team, said that it was important to address the fact that children with special needs are more likely to develop oral health problems. She added that the roadshows have received very positive feedback and said that the team has really enjoyed meeting the children and getting them excited about oral health.

Celia Wright, head teacher at Sunningdale School, said that the event had been a huge success and the children had enjoyed the activities. For many of them, cleaning their teeth is not a pleasant experience but the roadshow has helped them to understand why it is important to do so.
