A woman who underwent dental treatment in Turkey has shared her story to raise awareness of the dangers of dental tourism.

Lisa Martin, from County Kerry, flew to Turkey to have dental mono crowns. The cost of primary treatment was around £1,250, which was significantly cheaper than the quote Lisa received for treatment at home. Initially, everything seemed fine and Lisa was happy with the results of the first procedure, but within weeks, she noticed a small crack in one of the crowns.

Shortly after Lisa spotted the crack in the first crown, Lisa returned to Turkey to undergo the second procedure, which involved filing the teeth down and fitting more crowns at a cost of almost £3,000. After landing back in Ireland, Lisa developed an abscess, which caused the whole of one side of her face to swell, leaving her in agony.

Unfortunately for Lisa, the abscess was the tip of the iceberg. When she visited her local dentist, she was informed that she would need regular appointments and multiple root canals at a cost of thousands of pounds. As well as facing the stress of paying for dental treatment, Lisa is unable to eat properly and she has lost weight as a result.

Speaking about the experience, Lisa said that she made a decision, which will now impact her for the rest of her life. She was looking to save money by going to Turkey, but the procedure to fix her teeth will now cost a vast amount. As the crowns are all joined together, it has turned into a “huge job” for her dentist and she fears she is going to lose her teeth because she can’t afford the bills.

Lisa wanted to share her tale to alert others to the possible dangers of going abroad for dental treatment. A video she shared on TikTok has already amassed more than 330,000 views.
