A burglar who broke into a dental practice in Kenilworth and made off with three purses has been jailed.
Darren McKinlay, who was described as a ‘professional burglar’ in court, was jailed for three years after being found guilty of stealing from Kenilworth Dental Practice. McKinlay stole three purses and subsequently tried to encourage members of staff to disclose their pin numbers so that he could access funds. He was also found guilty of failing to surrender to custody and breaching the terms of a suspended sentence at Warwick Crown Court.
The incident took place in December 2014. Cameras show Mr McKinlay arriving at the Station Road practice at 2.30pm. He was accompanied by John King. Mr King was there to avert the attention of reception staff while Mr McKinlay made his way upstairs to the staff room. King rifled through the pockets of coats in the waiting room before striking up conversation with the receptionists and trying to book an appointment. At the same time, Mr McKinlay had forced the door of the staff room, which was locked, open and proceeded to take the three purses. He then left the surgery with Mr King, but made a call to the desk half an hour later requesting information about pin numbers. Fortunately, staff declined to give out any details.
The court heard that both men had a lengthy list of convictions for similar incidents.
