Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has undergone dental surgery to correct damage sustained after a man threw a statue at him from close range in 2009.

The Prime Minister has undergone jaw and dental surgery, according to his office; Mr Berlusconi suffered two broken teeth, a broken nose and a damaged jaw when a 42 year old man called Massimo Tartaglia threw a statue of Milan cathedral at him in December 2009.

Berlusconi’s doctor, Alberto Zangrillo, confirmed that the Prime Minister has had surgery to correct damage sustained in the 2009 attack and claims that he is now recovering at his villa, having been discharged from hospital in Milan. Zangrillo confirmed that Berlusconi has had an implant to restore his ability to chew, as well as bone transplantation.

Last month, the Prime Minister was seen tugging at his face during a press conference and he has now had an urgent operation to correct the damage; he was due to meet Israel’s foreign minister tomorrow but has had to postpone the meeting.

Berlusconi is no stranger to surgery; in the last 15 years, it is believed that he has had at least five cosmetic procedures and he has spoken publicly in favour of cosmetic surgery.

Alberto Zangrillo has suggested that Berlusconi will return to work later this week; he is expected to attend a European summit meeting in Brussels on Friday.
