Two new NHS dental practices have opened on the Isle of Wight this week.

Reports suggest that the clinics will increase access to NHS dentistry for around 12,000 Islanders.

Cross Street Dental Centre is situated in Ryde and the Whitecross Dental Care can be found in Freshwater.

They were set up thanks to a scheme from NHS Isle of Wight and Integrated Dental Holdings.

The Department of Health’s chief dental officer, Barry Cockcroft, official opened the practices on Tuesday 19 January 2010.

Primary care senior commissioning manager, Caroline Morris, said that she was delighted that the NHS was having a significant impact, improving the oral health of the Island’s population.

She added that the NHS has spent more than £4million on dental services in the area during the last four years.

It is suggested that the 50 per cent of Isle of Wight’s population will have access to NHS dentistry and it is expected that this number will increase by 10 per cent during the next year.

If you would like to register for NHS dentistry for one of these practices call the Island’s Dental Helpline on 0845 050 8345, or see www.hampshiredentalhelpline.nhs.uk
