Animal lovers in the Isle of Wight are in mourning after news broke that Snoopy, the island’s much-loved lion, was put to sleep.

Vets decided to put Snoopy to sleep after they discovered a cancerous tumour in his mouth during a routine dental operation; it was decided that Snoopy should be out down to prevent him from suffering any pain as the tumour increased in size.

Charlotte Corney, director of the Isle of Wight Zoo, said that the news was very sad; she had cared for the iconic lion since he was just 18 months old and she described as “a lion king” and a “real character.”

Ms Corney said that Snoopy was a “huge force of energy around the zoo” and added that it would be quiet and strange without him. She said that all the keepers were distraught and said that Snoopy’s brother, Charlie Brown, was already missing him.

Ms Corney said that Snoopy had a long and happy life at the zoo and although he will be sorely missed, everyone is relieved that he will not suffer.
