Isle of Wight Dental Services Report Finished

The Isle of Wight LINk (Local Involvement Network) has compiled a report on the island’s dental services.

Representatives from the network decided to do some research into dental services, after being contacted by a woman who was struggling to find a dentist and had been advised to register with a practice on the opposite side of the island.

The report is designed to establish how people feel about the services on the island, how much they know about the services available to them and how positive their experiences with dentists on the island have been.

Information was collected from members of the public via telephone and online questionnaires as well as face-to-face interviews.

The report revealed that only 44% of those involved in the survey had a child registered with an NHS dentist on the island. Of the 71 people who completed the online questionnaire, 84% have a dentist on the island, 65% are registered with an NHS dentist and only 39% had a dentist in their local area. Just under half of those questioned were aware that dental care is free for under 18s.

Several of the comments left on the questionnaires suggested that people had struggled to find an NHS dentist, with some people claiming that they had been waiting for years for NHS places to become available in their local area.

The final touches are now being carried out to complete the report, which will be sent to the Isle of Wight LINk’s Stewardship Group. The group will analyse the responses in order to put forward proposals for improvements to the current service.
