An Irish dental benefits provider has developed a new product in response to the scrapping of the PRSI Dental Treatment Benefits scheme.

Vhi DeCare Dental today announced the details of its Vhi DeCare Dental Starter package which has been designed to encourage people to keep visiting the dentist despite the loss of PRSI cover.

In the past, more than two million people were eligible for help with the costs of dental care from the government’s PRSI scheme. People used to be entitled to two free dental check-ups a year as well as a number of free or reduced cost treatments. Now, less people are eligible for the scheme and those that can receive its protection only receive one free check-up a year.

With the Vhi DeCare Dental Starter package patients get up to 70% cover for preventative and investigative dental treatments, up to 50% cover for basic procedures like fillings and up to 40% cover for major procedures like roots canals.

Declan Moran, Vhi’s director of marketing and business development, said that the benefit provider was committed to protecting the oral health of the Irish population by providing affordable dental solutions.

He also claimed that Vhi had created the starter package in response to the PSRI cover withdrawal and that it had been tailored to meet the needs of the patients.

Dr Ger Gavin, chief dental officer with Vhi, added that protecting the Ireland’s oral health was Vhi’s top priority.

He also said that the starter package cover could cost some patients as little as €10 a month and that it would be available from 1 April 2010.
