Irish dental group slashes prices

The largest Irish dental group has given its patients a treat for New Year by slashing its prices by 30 per cent.

Smiles Dental Group has adjusted its prices to stop patients travelling to Northern Ireland for dental treatment where prices are a third cheaper.

It announced the cut after negotiating new costs with its dentists, suppliers, and landlords and has now sparked rumours that a price war could soon ensue.

Fintan Hourihan, Irish Dental Association (IDA) chief executive, claimed that dentists all over Ireland were dropping their prices because of the ever-competitive market.

Smiles hopes that patients will now continue maintaining their dental health with its dentists despite the government cutting the PRSI financial assistance for many families.

Budget changes meant that many workers would no longer be able to claim two free six-monthly check-ups, a teeth-cleaning session and other dental discounts courtesy of PRSI.

Those that are still covered with PRSI are now only entitled to receive one dental check-up per year.

Emmet O’Neill, Smiles’s managing director, said that the cuts were made to ensure prices were affordable and competitive, and so that patients could continue to access top quality dental treatments.
