An investigation has been launched after a teenage girl died after a trip to the dentist.

Marissa Kingery, a 13 year old girl from Lorain County, died after undergoing oral surgery to have a number of teeth removed. During the operation, Marissa lost consciousness and a member of staff called 911; Marissa was then taken to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. The teenager spent two weeks on life support and eventually died on Monday.

Marissa was undergoing surgery at Doctor Henry Mazarow’s office in Lorain when she became unresponsive. Her Aunt, Audrey Leanza, said that the family were absolutely devastated and paid tribute to her niece.

Initial reports from the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office suggest that there was a shortage of oxygen to Marissa’s brain while she was anaesthetised during the operation. The Ohio State Dental Board will now carry out a full investigation into the teenager’s death; the board have already announced that there have been no complaints against Dr Mazarow in the past. During the investigation, certain limitations may be placed on Dr Mazarow, according to board Executive Director, Lili Reitz.

A memorial service will be held for Marissa at Eastern Heights Middle School in Elyria, where she was a pupil.
