Inquest Rules Retired Dental Surgeon Committed Suicide

A coroner has ruled that a retired dental surgeon took his own life, after becoming increasingly concerned that he would be unable to look after himself in his old age.

Albert Russell, an 89-year-old retired dental surgeon, was found dead at his home in Gossops Green at the beginning of January. He had not been seen for some time and the neighbours became concerned and called the police. Police forced entry into Mr Russell’s home, where they found him lying dead in his armchair. His wrists had been cut and police discovered a knife at the scene. Paramedics were called but there was nothing they could do.

Mr Russell lived alone but his family visited on a regular basis. However, he worried about being able to look after himself as he got older.

Coroner Christopher Wilkinson confirmed that the cause of death was suicide and said that this was “a very sad case”. The post-mortem concluded that the cause of death was hypovolemic shock and Mr Wilkinson said that there was no doubt that Albert took his own life.
