Doctors in India have successfully carried out the removal of 80 teeth from a 7 year old boy’s upper jaw.

Doctors at the Maharajah Yeshwantrao Hospital in Indore carried out a four hour operation on the 7 year old, who suffers from odontoma. All 80 teeth were removed from the upper jaw.

Surgery was carried out just days after the boy was seen by doctors after he developed dental pain. He had an abscess in the upper jaw and subsequent investigations revealed a severe case of odontoma. Doctors planned the procedure and then days later, they drained and cleared the abscess and removed 80 teeth.

Odontoma is a rare condition that occurs when a tumour develops in the jaws or gums. It causes numerous tooth-like structures to form.

The procedure is not the first of its kind to be performed in India. In July last year, surgeons in Mumbai removed 232 teeth from a teenage boy’s mouth.
