Indian Dentists Offer Oral Health Tips For Diabetic Patients

Sample News Big

Dentists in India are helping to tackle the dental problems faced by diabetic patients. Dentists are educating patients about the link between oral health and diabetes in order to reduce the risk of patients with diabetes suffering from oral diseases.

Dr Shalini Jaggi, senior consultant with Action Diabetic Centre, which is part of the Sri Balaji Action Medical Centre, said that patients with diabetes face oral health challenges that other patients do not face, due to the increased risk of oral diseases including gum disease, infection, slow healing and problems with the salivary glands.

Dr Jaggi said that diabetes is not a cause of oral diseases but it does contribute to an increased risk and therefore patients must take care to prioritise oral hygiene and dental care. Patients with diabetes commonly suffer from dry mouth and the risk of infections is higher due to the presence of harmful bacteria in the mouth, which can be increased as a result of high glucose levels.

Diabetic patients are advised to attend regular visits and maintain good standards of oral hygiene; brushing twice a day is essential and flossing and using mouthwash are also important. Dentists are also in an ideal position to spot the early signs of diabetes in patients who have not yet been diagnosed.
