The government have stated that the current ban imposed on UK dentists who are HIV positive is to be lifted as of April 2014.

This Department of Health have taken this action after receiving measured advice from a lengthy list of independent scientific sources.

Now the UK will have the same policy as countries such as Canada, New Zealand, France and Sweden. The decision has been commended by a multitude of organisations including the British Dental Association.

Professor Walmsley from the BDA stated that it was unfair to essentially end a dentist’s career as soon as they were HIV positive. He went onto say that it also disregards the fact that tax payer money paid for the training in some instances, so it should not be wasted.

No recorded case of HIV being passed from a practitioner to a patient has ever been proven in the UK. Globally there have only ever been four, with the latest taking place well over ten years ago.
