Historic Wakefield pub could be turned into a new dental surgery

Plans to turn a historic pub in Wakefield into a new dental surgery have been submitted to the council.

Under the proposals, the main part of the premises formerly occupied by Moodies Free House would be converted into a modern dental practice. The remaining parts of the building would be used as residential accommodation, a wine bar and a shop.

Moodies is located on Little Westgate. The building has been used as a pub since 1890 although it did house a Pizza Hut outlet in the 1980s.

In a statement accompanying the plans, developers suggested that the size and layout of the building, which stretches over three storeys with multiple levels, had become “uneconomical.” The development project would enhance the functionality of the premises while also bringing more people to Bread Street. At present, the statement said, there was a risk that a small number of vacant buildings in the area could spiral into larger numbers, impacting the local economy and the community.

Converting the historic building would breathe new life into the area and provide an essential local service in the form of a dental clinic at a time when the demand for dental care is rising, according to the plans. The application will now be considered by planning officers.
