A historic building in Selby is set for a new chapter after planning officers approved proposals for a new dental practice.

The former NatWest building, which is opposite Selby Abbey, has been earmarked for a new dental clinic as part of a project to enhance the historic part of the town centre.

The premises have already been renovated with new windows and doors and roof repairs. Permission has been granted to change the use of the building.

The renovation work was funded by Selby District Council as part of the High Street Heritage Action Zone programme, which is partly funded by Historic England.

Jane Jackson, from Historic England, described the project as “exciting” and said that the programme will “breathe new life” into the centre of Selby while contributing to a thriving high street.

A new dental clinic will open in the building, which was previously used as offices by NatWest, in the near future. Further details, including services and opening hours will be confirmed in the weeks ahead and patients wishing to enquire about making appointments will be provided with contact details.

The move has been welcomed by councillors, including Selby District Council’s executive member for communities and economic development, David Buckle, who said that he was “delighted” with the results of the first stage of upgrades.
