High school students benefitting from free dental care

High school students from Buena Vista High School in Michigan received free dental care as part of an event to raise awareness of oral health.

The event was organised by nursing students from the Saginaw Valley State University; the students visit the school every six months to offer treatment to students and talk to them about oral hygiene and oral health.

Rita Cheek, principal of the school, said the visit from the mobile unit made a huge difference to the students, as many of them do not have dental insurance and would otherwise probably struggle to afford dental treatment. The unit is equipped with instruments and equipment suitable for treating teenage students. The students are also keen to use the time to educate teenagers about ways to improve oral health and prevent oral health conditions, including gum disease and tooth decay, which are often very common amongst high school students.

Oral health can be an important indicator of general health and millions of hours of class time are missed every year as a result of children suffering from oral health problems. Offering children dental treatment helps to improve their general health and allows them to make the most of their time at school.
