Health Experts Slam ‘Healthy’ New McDonalds Kids Drink

Health experts have criticised fast food giant McDonalds after it was revealed that their brand new ‘healthy’ kids drink contains more than 12 teaspoons of sugar.

The ‘Frutizz’ drink has been branded as a healthy alternative to popular fizzy drinks, which provides children with one of their five daily portions of fruit and vegetables, however, on closer inspection, experts found that a 500ml cup holds 49 grams of sugar and more than 200 calories.

Christina Merryfield, a dietician from London’s Bupa Cromwell Hospital, said that the drink is packed full of calories and sugar, which contribute to two of the most common preventable childhood illnesses in the UK: obesity and tooth decay. The Frutizz drink contains higher sugar levels than a can of Fanta and Merryfield believes that it is misleading for McDonalds to label the drink as a ‘healthy’ alternative to other soft drinks. She also added that water and milk are much better options for children.

Malcolm Clark, spokesman for the Children’s Food Campaign, said that it was encouraging that large companies are trying to include healthier options on their menus.

The Fruitizz drink will be available in restaurants across the country from the 16th May.
