Health bosses are exploring new options amid a deepening dental access crisis in Basingstoke.

There are currently no new NHS adult places available at any of the 22 practices in the town, according to the NHS website. Some of the town’s dental clinics have switched to private services in the last two years and just a few weeks ago, Chequers Dental Practice contacted patients to make them aware that NHS services would stop in April. The practice is owned by Dr Milad Shadrooh, also known as the ‘Singing Dentist.’

Patients in the area are finding it increasingly difficult to get an NHS dental appointment. A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board said that the board is currently exploring new options in light of the news that Chequers Dental Practice will not provide NHS treatment from May. They added that patients will be kept informed of any contract developments, which mean that new NHS places become available.

NHS England data suggests that NHS dentist numbers have fallen in Hampshire, with a 6% decrease in 2020/2021.

In a letter to patients, Dr Milad Shadrooh explained that it had been a difficult decision to stop NHS services, but that it was necessary to ensure that patients received the appropriate level of care. The practice is offering private dentistry plans from £10- £17.50 per month for those who wish to stay on the register. Children will be able to access free dental care up to the age of 10 if they have a parent registered with the practice as a private patient.
