Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has launched a tendering process in a bid to continue dental services at Barry Hospital. The move comes after the last remaining dentist at the hospital retired.

For the moment, no dental services will be available at Barry Hospital. However, plans are in place to replace the previous provider as quickly as possible. Primary care support manager at the board, David Oliver, said that the aim was to transfer NHS dental services in Barry over to a new provider by the 1st April. He confirmed that the contract was out to tender and services would be up and running again in Barry very soon.

Patients who have been treated at the hospital in the last two years have been contacted by the board to inform them of proposed changes and an interim service has been made available for those who require urgent treatment before the new contract begins. Two Barry dentists have agreed to provide emergency cover until March 31st and the board is making every effort to continue the service with minimal disruption.
