Gum Disease Rife Among Family Pets

Sample News Big

According to veterinarians, periodontal disease is one of the most common illnesses among small animals.

Vets estimate that around 75% of dogs suffer from gum disease, but many owners may be unaware of their dog’s condition until the symptoms are advanced, causing their pet a lot of pain. Symptoms to look out for include bad breath, swollen and sore gums, a loss of appetite and bleeding gums.

Vets are eager to raise awareness of the importance of oral healthcare for pets, as some owners do not realise that they should be keeping an eye on their dog’s oral health. Vets encourage dog owners to clean the dog’s teeth and give them special chews, which are designed to massage the gums and cleanse the mouth. It is also advisable to take dogs for regular dental check-ups.

In order to raise awareness of pet oral health, Nylabone UK has launched a competition called Make Us Smile, to allow owners to showcase their pets at the same time as raising the profile of oral health. Owners are invited to send in a short video clip of their dog having fun and the winner of the competition will feature on the Nylabone UK Facebook page, as well as receiving a year’s supply of dog treats and supplies.

What a great way to raise awareness and to get the checkups needed for small pets.
