A brand new multi-million pound Royal Marines medical and dental unit has been officially opened.

The state of the art unit, which is located at the Bickleigh base in Plymouth, was officially opened with a grand ceremony.

The unit will provide excellent care facilities for Royal Marines from 42 Commando and boasts a fully-equipped dental department, physiotherapy suite and preventative medical services.

Commander Carol Betteridge, former commanding officer at Camp Bastion hospital in Afghanistan was invited to conduct the opening with Royal Marine, William Cassidy Little.

Commander Betteridge said that the unit, which cost £3 million, would provide the Marines with the very best care to ensure that that they are fit and healthy.

Marine Cassidy Little, who has served in Afghanistan and lost a leg as a result of a Taliban explosion, said that the unit brings the regiment into a “new age” and provides the best possible care for the Marines, as well as providing medical education.

Lieutenant Colonel Neil Sutherland, Commanding Officer of 42 Commando, said that it was extremely important for the Marines to have access to state of the art medical and dental facilities, as the previous facilities were dated and not suitable for Marines, who are required to be in peak physical condition at all times.
