The government has confirmed extra places for medicine and dentistry courses for 2021.

In response to a significant rise in applications, ministers have increased the number of available places at universities offering medical and dental programmes to enable more students to start studying this year. Numbers for medicine and dentistry are capped by the government. With application numbers increasing by over 20% this year and more students obtaining the grades needed to secure a place, the government has offered universities extra cash to take on more students.

For 2021, the government has adjusted the cap to allow more than 9,000 students to study medicine and dentistry with a view to boosting NHS staff numbers in the long-term and enabling students who achieved the grades needed to pursue their career aspirations.

In addition to offering funding to universities that are able to offer more places for students, the government has also been working with UCAS to ensure that students who have the required grades are able to access places at universities and dental schools that have spaces available if they have applied to oversubscribed courses.

Some courses in England are oversubscribed, and students may have the option to take up an offer at an alternative university if there is space available. This will enable them to start studying in 2021 and reduce pressure on universities that are unable to accept all students who have achieved the grades.
