Plans to build a new, state of the art dental hospital in Birmingham have received government support.

The Department of Health has officially approved plans to build the new hospital on the former BBC site at Pebble Mill. Planning consent for the development was approved last November.

Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust is hoping that work will start on the site this winter, with the aim of opening the hospital to the public in 2014. It is also hoped that the dental school will be ready for its first intake of students in the autumn of 2014.

The four-storey building will replace the current dental hospital, which is located in St Chad’s Queensway and is 50 years old.

The site will also include a brand new school of dentistry, which will be run by the University of Birmingham.

The development is being managed by Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust in association with the University of Birmingham, Calthorpe Estates and Solihull Local Initiative Finance Trust.

Rick Roberts, medical director, said that it was very pleasing for the site to have official government backing and added that the design process is well underway. He also said that the new site would provide state of the art educational facilities for dental students, as well as first class care services for dental patients in the region.
