Good dental health helps to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, according to analysis of more than 45 studies.

Research published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society includes analysis of 47 studies. The analysis indicates that healthy teeth and gums lower the risk of dementia and cognitive decline. Tooth decay and gum disease elevate the risk of cognitive decline by 23% and dementia by 21%.

The study also showed that tooth loss was linked to a higher risk of dementia (13%) and cognitive decline (23%).

The authors of the analysis suggest that their findings underline the importance of monitoring dental health and promoting protective and preventative measures, including good oral hygiene, healthy eating and regular dental appointments. The study authors pointed out that further research is required to identify high-risk individuals early and prevent further signs of decline and deterioration in those who have dementia.

The most effective ways to lower the risk of periodontal health issues and tooth decay include twice-daily cleaning, daily flossing and regular routine check-ups. Avoiding snacking, moderating sugar intake and seeing a dental hygienist once a year are also beneficial. Gum disease is a progressive condition. If detected early, it can be treated and managed effectively. Dentists recommend seeking advice if patients notice symptoms, such as red, sore and swollen gums and bleeding during brushing.
