Gloucestershire Dentists Pop In To Schools To Meet Pupils

Sample News Big

Dentists in Gloucestershire are visiting schools to meet children prior to dental appointments; the aim of the scheme is to break the ice and get to know children so that going to the dentist is not such a daunting experience for the kids.

Dentists, dental therapists and oral health educators are visiting schoolchildren to talk to them about oral hygiene and prepare them for visits to the dentist in a bid to teach children that going to the dentist is nothing to worry about.

Clarence House Dental Health Centre in Gloucester is paving the way for other practices in the area and oral health expert Georgina Pugh has been instrumental in preparing children for a trip to the dentist. Georgina has lead the practice’s dental education programme to prepare children for going to the dentist and hopefully reduce any anxiety linked to dental check-ups.

Georgina said that the sessions are designed to be fun and informal; children are encouraged to dress up and role play, as if they were at the dental surgery and the dental team shows them some of the instruments and equipment they will see at the dental surgery and talks to them about what they can expect to happen when they see their dentist.

Children are taught how to brush their teeth properly and they are also given an egg-timer so that they brush their teeth for the recommended time. School visitors also talk to children and parents about healthy eating and they check for sings of dental plaque using a special disclosing solution.
