Dentists in Gloucestershire are doing their bit to raise awareness of mouth cancer as part of Mouth Cancer Action Month.

Dentists in Dursley and Stroud have displayed posters to educate people about the causes and symptoms of mouth cancer and raise awareness of the disease, which affects more than 6,000 people every year in the UK.

Members of staff at Archway Dental in Stroud and Dursley are also hoping to encourage people to visit the practice for mouth cancer screening this month in a bid to reduce the number of cases and ensure that as many cases as possible are diagnosed at an early stage.

The posters feature the headline, ‘speak out’ and encourage patients to look out for warning signs, such as slow-healing sores and mouth ulcers, swellings and lumps and red or white patches in the mouth and promote oral cancer screening.

The Dursley practice will be offering free mouth cancer screening on Friday November 29th from 2pm.

Dentist, Steve Clarke, said that screening is important because surveys suggest that a third of people are unaware of the risk factors for oral cancer. He stressed the importance of raising awareness of oral cancer and said that “too few people know about it.”

Mr Clarke added that the message from dentists is to attend regular check-ups, as they could potentially save your life.
