Genetic Mutations Cause Dental and Oral Anomalies

Sample News Big

A study conducted at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine found a connection between cleft palate and tooth anomalies, such as missing teeth, extra teeth, and immature teeth, and at least a dozen genes. Some of the genes included; TGFA, ERBB2, PVR, IRF6, PVRL, and MSX1. Cleft palate and dental abnormalities can increase the incidence of cancer, psychiatric disorders, and early death. Early screening and the possibility of gene therapy can help to prevent cleft lip and oral anomalies. Approximately seven hundred individuals are born with cleft lip yearly, with Asians showing the highest occurrence, followed by Caucasians, and then Africans.
