The General Dental Council has elected Alison Lockyer as its new chairperson.

After hustings and an election were held on Tuesday 1 December 2009 at the council’s (GDC) offices in Wimpole Street, London, the electoral reform services announced Dr Lockyer as the winner.

A full-time primary care dentist, Dr Lockyer returned as a registrant member of the GDC this year as part of restructuring which aimed to make the council smaller and totally appointed.

It now fairly reflects dental care providers and receivers with 12 dental professionals and 12 members of the public sitting on the council.

Dr Lockyer, who graduated in Edinburgh in 1980, said: “I am really looking forward to leading this multi-skilled and talented council in public protection.”

Talks are on-going when the handover of power from current chair Hew Mathewson to Dr Lockyer will take place.

It is expected that Dr Lockyer will take office on Friday 1 January 2010 or when Mr Mathewson steps down, depending on which is earlier.

Mr Mathewson said that he felt privileged to have headed the GDC for more than six years and added that he was delighted to be handing over his duties to a chair with Dr Lockyer’s expertise and experience.

Dr Lockyer thanked Mr Mathewson for his commitment to the council and added that he would be a hard act to follow.
