Free Fluoride Treatments for Islington Children

Sample News Big

Free fluoride treatments will be offered to children aged between 3 and 10 years old in Islington, it has been announced.

As part of a new scheme, a specialist dental team will visit 34 schools, children’s centres and nurseries in the Islington area to provide free fluoride varnish treatments.

Fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth in a very quick and simple procedure, which helps to strengthen the teeth, making them more resistant to decay. Children under the age of 10 will have two treatments a year.

Rates of decay are high in Islington and many children do not visit their dentist on a regular basis. NHS Islington is trying to encourage parents to take their children for regular examinations from an early age and have launched a campaign with the tagline, ‘first tooth= first visit’. Children who learn to brush their teeth twice a day at an early age are more likely to have good oral health and visiting a dentist from an early age will help them to get used to the sounds and sights of the surgery and reduce the risk of them suffering from poor oral health and dental phobia further down the line.

A full list of participating schools and nurseries is available from NHS Islington.
