More than one hundred people were treated at a free dental day in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Around 40 dentists and a number of dental assistants and hygienists joined forces to host the state’s largest free dental event last Saturday. Free dental treatments were available at five different sites across the south of the state.

Carmen Derby, from the United Way of Windham County, a local organisation which supported the event, said that the free dental day was a way of reaching out to people in need. Derby said that there was a huge demand for dental treatment but most people were unable to get treatment because they cannot afford to pay for treatment and they do not have dental insurance.

Diana Dee, from Brattleboro, visited Brattleboro Elks Lodge to get a tooth extracted; she said that without the clinic she would never have been able to afford to get the tooth taken out and it was causing her a great deal of pain. She said that the clinic saved her around $1,500.

More than one hundred people received treatment on Saturday morning and most people had tooth extractions or restorations. The aim of the clinic was to help people who would otherwise go without treatment, due to their lack of dental insurance and they cannot afford to pay for treatment up-front.

This was the fifth annual Free Dental Care Day and organisers are looking into the possibility of expanding services and hosting the event more frequently.
