Free dental clinics struggling to cope with demand in the USA

Free dental clinics are struggling to cope with the rising demand, according to organisers.

In recent years, free clinics have become increasingly popular, as an increasing number of people are struggling to afford dental treatment. Free clinics run all over America but they are struggling to cater for all those in need.

A free health clinic has been scheduled in Charlotte; the clinic will not be held until the end of the month, yet all the appointments have already been filled. This trend is typical of clinics across the country and many people spend hours queuing for appointments, with some even braving snow and camping out overnight to get an appointment.

Free clinics rely on volunteers and the goodwill of dental staff and charities; despite their willingness to help, unfortunately, they are just not able to treat everyone and a large proportion of those who want to attend a free dental clinic will not be able to secure a slot.

The global recession hit many people hard; many lost their jobs and their employment benefits, including medical and dental insurance cover. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that almost half of Americans do not have dental insurance; as a result, they are faced with expensive bills for dental care, which they simply cannot afford. Many dentists have reported an increase in the number of patients postponing or cancelling appointments because they do not have enough money to pay for treatment.
