An oral hygiene programme in Dubai is planning to screen 4,000 workers following the successful screening of more than 2,000 labourers in 2015.

Launched under the patronage of Crown Prince of Dubai, Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the oral hygiene initiative was launched last year and found some significant results that will help better manage labourers’ oral hygiene. The initiative was launched in conjunction with Dubai Dental Clinic and the Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs in Dubai and was carried out by staff and students from the Hamdan Bin Mohammad College of Dental Medicine.

Information gathered during the 12 month campaign showed that nearly every person examined suffered with dental problems, the most common being tartar and plaque, tooth decay and gum disease. About 46 percent of workers complained of toothache and severe dental issues were discovered in 44 percent of workers. These workers required dental extractions.

Almost 30 percent of workers had missing teeth and required fixed or removable replacements. It was observed that overall, 81 percent were in need of oral hygiene programmes.
