The former president of the UK’s General Dental Council has received royal recognition.

Dr Hew Mathewson was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in this year’s new year’s honours list for his life-long dedication to health care.

A council (GDC) member since 1996, Dr Mathewson was president for more than six years and became the council’s first ever chair.

Alison Lockyer, who took-over the position of chair from Dr Mathewson on 1 January 2010, said that no one had done more for the GDC than Dr Mathewson did in his time as chair and added that the council is indebted to him for his efforts.

Interim Chief Executive, Alison White, congratulated Dr Mathewson and said that the CBE recognised all his hard work and achievements.

She called his commitment to patients “unwavering” and said that he had been the catalyst for some of the most significant changes in the GDC’s history.
